Adrian Athletics names Frank and Shirley Dick Senior Scholar-Athlete Award recipients

Voted on by the Adrian College Faculty Athletic Representatives, Bulldog Athletics has announced that Caroline Fleming of Women’s Soccer and Rainer Glimpel with American Collegiate Hockey Association Division 1 Men’s Hockey are the recipients of the 2019-20 Frank and Shirley Dick Senior-Scholar Athlete award.

“This duo is an outstanding combination of not only excellence in athletics and academics but also a reflection of great individuals who represented their campus and teams very well,” Director of Athletics Michael Duffy said about the honorees. “They were not only leaders on the field of play but were leaders on campus. They will be missed for their all-round contributions to Adrian College.”

Fleming (Grosse Ile High School) capped a stellar final year on the soccer pitch for the Bulldogs in which she raked in a slew of awards: United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division III All-America Second Team, USC All-Central Region First Team, Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Most Valuable Player, All-MIAA First Team, USC All-America Scholar First Team and College Sports Information Directors’ of America Division III Women’s Soccer First Team.

“It is an honor to be recognized for this award because so many student-athletes at Adrian College are so deserving,” she said. “I am just lucky to have been surrounded by such supportive teammates, coaches, faculty and staff. I will always be proud to be an ACWS alumni and I feel so grateful for everything AC has done for me both in the classroom and on the playing field.” 

Fleming paced the MIAA with 16 goals, a school-record 14 assists and 46 total points — all career highs. She also led the Bulldogs with five game-winners.

She plays professionally for the inaugural Detroit City Football Club of the National Premier Soccer League, tying for the team lead in goals.

Adrian won its second-straight MIAA tournament title and claimed the regular-season crown for the first time since 2011. The Bulldogs also advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III Women’s Soccer Championship in their second-ever trip to the national tournament, finishing with a school-record-tying 17 wins (17-5-2). Fleming capped off a stellar playing career as she collected the program’s first-ever goal in an NCAA Tournament game, lifting the Bulldogs over Wis.-Stevens Point in double overtime (1-0) in the opening round of the 2019 tournament on Nov. 16.

Her career accolades on the field include three-time All-MIAA First Team (2017, 2018, 2019), three-time USC All-Region (2017, 2018, 2019) and two-time Adrian College ACEES Best Female Athlete (2018, 2019). Fleming also is noted as the first Bulldog ever in any sport to earn the prestigious CoSIDA Academic All-America award as she debuted in 2018 on the third team. Statistically, she holds the school record for career assists with 34 and she’s one of three players in the program’s history to reach the 100-point plateau (112/with 39 goals).

Fleming graduated with a degree in exercise science, carrying a 3.98 grade-point average, and is enrolled in the College’s graduate studies program for athletic training. In 2017, she received the AC Athletic Training “Rising Star” award.

Fleming has cared as much about her passion for extra-curricular activities as she has for her excellence on both the field and in the classroom. She was the chair of the Adrian College Special Olympics Soccer program. She also was a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee Executive Board, Mortar Board, Alpha Chi and Athletic Training Student Organization.

“We’re all extremely proud and grateful for all that Caroline has been able to accomplish over the past four years, not just for herself but for our program as a whole,” said Adrian women’s soccer coach, Ali Alamdari. “Her level of success on the field and in the classroom proves just how much is possible for elite student-athletes at Adrian College. We’re excited to see what comes next for her as she continues her professional career.”

A Calgary, Alberta, resident (Osoyoos Coyotes, KIJHL), Glimpel racked up 161 career points in 130 games and helped the Bulldogs to four Great Lakes Collegiate Hockey League championships, three GLCHL playoff titles, one ACHA national championship (2018) and numerous Top-25 national rankings.

The forward is a multiple All-GLCHL skater including to the 2020 second team after scoring totals of 18 goals and 26 assists for 44 points.

Glimpel turned down several offers to play professional hockey so that he could concentrate his efforts into the business world after he received a bachelor’s degree in accounting, with a computer information systems minor, while recording a 3.96 GPA.

Glimpel has been an ambassador for the Bulldogs ACHA hockey program for his teammates to follow his lead. He has volunteered in a local soup kitchen to feed the homeless and participated with AC Soccer Special Olympics. On-campus, he served on the SAAC Committee with Fleming and other student-athletes, as president of College President Jeffrey Docking’s Student-Advisory Board and worked in the Office of Academic Affairs.

“I have known Rainer for four years as a member of our ACHA D1 men’s hockey team. He is the captain of our team and simply put, he is the most dedicated, honest, and hardworking young man I have had the pleasure to coach in the four years I have been at Adrian College,” head coach Gary Astalos said. “I feel Rainer more than deserves to be recognized by Adrian College as the Frank and Shirley Dick Senior-Scholar Athlete recipient as he has truly been a role model and natural leader in our campus community. I could not be happier for him and thank him for all that he has done for our hockey program and college as a whole. I look forward to following his very bright future.”

“I’m honored to receive the Frank and Shirley Dick Award, Glimpel said. “I think any success I have seen throughout my time at Adrian College is a reflection of the college, my family, teammates, coaches and professors. I’m very grateful for the opportunities and support I’ve been given throughout my collegiate career. There are so many great student-athletes at Adrian that are deserving of this award and I’m just proud to be part of that group.”
